Photo Review: Undercrown Dojo Dogma Maduro (2020)

As the first collaborative project from Cigar Dojo, the Dogma—or, the Undercrown Dojo Dogma Maduro, as it is now known—is unquestionably the most storied cigar in a Dojo-branded collection that now spans 21 releases.

The Undercrown Dogma originally began production in 2013, eventually debuting exclusively through online retailer Smoke Inn in the spring of 2014. Only 650 bundles of 10 cigars (split into two separate releases) were made available for the original release, collectively selling out in under 10 hours. Smoke Inn declared the release their fastest selling ever (at the time), sealing the cigars into the status of “unicorn.” Dogma became a highly requested item for enthusiasts and collectors alike, reaching heights of $500 (per bundle) on secondary markets. But the Dogma was never intended to be a luxury item; subsequently, Drew Estate and Cigar Dojo made the decision to bring the blend back.

The Undercrown Dogma—an amped up, box-pressed variation of the traditional Undercrown Maduro blend—first returned in 2018, dubbed Undercrown Dojo Dogma Maduro. The cigars were showcased in the same size and blend as the famed 2014 release, this time being nationally distributed to Drew Diplomat-authorized retailers in limited quantities. Differentiating the cigars from the first batch, the 2018 edition used a new circular Cigar Dojo logo on the band’s back, as well as being printed on the kraft paper bundles. The packaging tweaks have continued to this day, allowing collector’s and enthusiasts to differentiate each release. The 2019 shipment showcased a new blue paper look with gold lettering. And the 2020 release has gone a step further, packaging the 10 cigars in more rigid petaca-style paper boxes, including new artwork and an added description on the box’s backside that reads:

The collaboration between Drew Estate & Cigar Dojo birthed “DOGMA”, a limited edition Undercrown that exemplifies the outgoing nature of this online cigar community that is run by & for real die-hard, true blue cigar loving fans across the nation. “Dogma” is a robust & fulfilling smoke in the same vein as “Corona Viva!”, featuring notes of cocoa, earth, and a rich spicy character.

The 2020 edition of the Undercrown Dojo Dogma Maduro was first announced in June, alongside the reveal of the first-ever Dogma spinoff, Undercrown Dojo Dogma Sun Grown. The latter debuted on July 30, with the Dogma Maduro later shipping in the last week of November, as limited quantities became available for the 2020 season.
