Six years after the original Undercrown Dogma release, Cigar Dojo and Drew Estate have collaborated once again, porting over the amped-up Dogma philosophy to Drew Estate’s Undercrown Sun Grown blend. Like the fan-favorite original, the Undercrown Dogma Sun Grown builds on the pre-existing core blend, amping the recipe up for a fuller smoking experience and rolling the cigars in a hefty box-pressed format.
Undercrown Dogma Sun Grown features a medium brown Ecuadorian Sumatra sun-grown wrapper, secured over a Connecticut stalk-cut/cured sun-grown Habano binder (the same seen on the Dogma Maduro), and all Nicaraguan fillers, including a unique leaf from the country’s Nueva Segovia region. Though listed at 5″ x 54, the cigar feels quite a bit thicker in diameter, translating to exceptionally large plumes of smoke through each draw.
The smoke is cool in texture, delivering bright, lively, zesty characteristics to the palate. This includes nutmeg and red pepper flakes as the cigar opens up. And while it’s somewhat fiery at the start, added complexity soon shows through in the background and finish, with red pepper becoming more along the lines of Hot Tamales candy, being joined by roasted chestnuts and buttery medium-roast coffee beans. Further along, the smoke shows its signature cinnamon character foremost, continuing its zesty sensations through the retrohale. This leads to a mellowing in the final inches, softening to that of buttered toast, black tea, and touches of caramel.
