Super Fly Connecticut Super Corona

Oscar Valladares is one of those names that has been popping up a lot over the last few years. I covered this in my review of the Wild Hunter Natural, so I won’t go into too much detail here. I’m guessing you—the ardent cigar enthusiast—have smoked at least one of the various Leaf by Oscar cigars, so I’ll just reaffirm that this is the Oscar that such cigars are referring to.

Here on the Dojo, we have given a lot of love to many of Oscar’s blends. The Super Fly Maduro garnered a very nice rating and was featured on an episode of Flavor Odyssey. The Wild Hunter Natural is a solid smoke, while the Altar Q and Ciserón Edition also received rave reviews. So the expectations were high for the Super Fly Connecticut—a 2020 followup to the buzzed-about Super Fly Maduro cigar.

Super Fly Connecticut Super Corona Breakdown

Appearance

The Super Fly Connecticut has a flashy look to it. The name and the design pay homage to the 1972 film of the same name, directed by Gordon Parks Jr. The film is probably best known for the amazing soundtrack provided by Curtis Mayfield. I digress. The band is very large and eye-catching. It features bright pink lettering on a black background. The pink lettering differs from the purple that was used on the maduro band.

Smoking Experience

The pre-light experience was rather enjoyable. The Honduran Connecticut wrapper was toothy, with notes of saltine crackers, hay, and some mild cabinet spices. The cold draw was packed with notes of honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon, nougat, and cedar.

I sparked it up and was a bit disappointed with the initial flavor output. There was a strong mineral vibe that reminded me of the smell of cement after rain. It’s a nice image, but not the best flavor, in my opinion. Notes of charred anise and sugar cookies rounded out the beginning portion of the experience.

I removed the band as we hit the middle of the cigar and I was hopeful for a turnaround. The mineral notes dissipated and were replaced by cedar and cinnamon, to go along with the sugar cookie element. After an inch, I was hit with a blast of black pepper on the retrohale, which threw off the balance that began to appear. The final third was a continuation of this muddled profile that never managed to find balance.

Would I Smoke This Cigar Again?

Negative, Ghostrider. Actually, I would like to try the toro and see if that size performs better.

• The Super Fly Connecticut was originally released at the Tobacco Plus Expo in late January of 2020.
• It debuted in the Super Corona size and the Super Toro was added later that year.
