Photo Review: Uru Doshi

Uru Doshi not only marks Cigar Dojo’s first collaborative release in 2020, but the first time partnering with the surging Alec & Bradley Cigars—a boutique-minded sub-brand under the Alec Bradley umbrella that showcases the tastes of second-generation cigarmakers Alec and Bradley Rubin. The project began in 2019 after the brothers returned from a trip to the Raíces Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, where they had selected a variety of blends that made use of tobaccos from untapped lots and farms throughout Honduras. The Cigar Dojo staff then selected the final blend, with only 3,000 toros being constructed for a unique project known as Uru Doshi.

A Japanese translation of leap year, Uru Doshi was crafted to coincide with the 2020 leap year calendar, being released exclusively through retailer Smoke Inn Cigars on Feb. 29th, 2020.

The earth completes its rotation of the sun every 365.25 days, requiring an additional day be added to the Gregorian calendar every four years. This day—Leap Day—is often punctuated by leap year celebrations, including time capsules that can be uncovered on future leap year occurrences. With premium cigars being among the world’s most age-worthy indulgences, cigar smokers are encouraged to put Uru Doshi to the test!

Uru Doshi consists of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos, including selections from both countries in the cigar’s filler and double binder. The blend was chosen for its unique flavor profile, catering to flavor and mouthfeel in place of body and strength. This is evidenced through a voluminous smoke output, primarily targeting the sweet, salty, and mouthwatering regions of the palate. The experience kicks off with zesty spices of white pepper and sage through the retrohale, quickly balancing to form a sweet, jam-like finish. This leads to highlights of cherry stone fruit, iron-rich red meat, freshly cut cedar, sweet nuts, and buttermilk—often having a lip-smacking sweetness through each long finish.
