Not only was Sobremesa Brûlée one of the most anticipated cigar releases of 2019, but perhaps the most controversial as well. The cigar was first announced one week prior to the industry’s annual trade show, quickly garnering attention as being the first Connecticut Shade-style blend from Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Founder, Steve Saka. Adding to the intrigue, Saka described the cigar as “this is your grandfather’s Connecticut,” taking aim at the growing trend of modernized fuller-bodied Connecticut cigars.
Sobremesa Brûlée is a spinoff version of Dunbarton’s 2015 freshman release, Sobremesa, utilizing a similar core recipe and swapping the wrapper for a highly specific top-shelf grade of BW Ecuador Connecticut Shade leaf. As Saka’s intention with Brûlée was to introduce smokers to the delicate and nuanced approach of Connecticut cigars from his youth, the Pennsylvania ligero of the original Sobremesa was removed, along with an increase of Condega seco. The resulting experience delivered on cue, albeit not without heated debate concerning whether or not the cigar featured a sweetened cap. The contention proved of little consequence, with those on both sides of the fence finding common ground in the cigar’s overall performance; being well-constructed, fine-tuned, mild yet deeply complex, clean, refreshing, and, perhaps most importantly, unforgettable.
