Have you ever heard the expression, “progress is gradual, then sudden”? This may help explain A.J. Fernández’s overnight success—a man who went from rolling cigars in his garage to becoming one of the most respected artisans in the business, all within a span of twenty years. In reality, the Fernández family trace their roots back to San Luis, Cuba, where A.J.’s grandfather began growing tobacco prior to the Castro era. The craft was was passed down to Ismael and, eventually, Abdel Fernández—a father-son duo that are now behind many of the most respected cigar lines available today. While the brand itself is more closely aligned with the 2010 launch of the San Lotano line, A.J. pays tribute to the aforementioned garage days with the AJ Fernandez 20th Anniversary cigar. Rolled in two limited formats, the cigars make use of Fernández’s most prized tobaccos from his farms of Nicaragua. The experience is rich in texture and loaded with intensity from the start, coming across like a seven-layer chocolate cake in cigar form.
