There was a time, not so long ago, when RoMa Craft seemed relatively content with their core offerings, with new releases typically taking the form of size variations or tweaks to pre-existing blends. This seems to have shifted in recent years, with the company branching out in terms of tobacco recipes, frequency of new releases, and even manufacturing (see: Quinquagenario). The theme continued in 2024, as the company showcased the Maestranza line, with the name being described as meaning, “the people who are around you helping.” In other words, Maestranza represent RoMa Craft’s thank you to their supporters, going so far as to include the initials of every employee of the company’s Nica Sueño factory on the cigar’s sub-band. In terms of tobacco, Maestranza is only the second mainstream line from the company to feature a Mexican San Andrés wrapper; specifically, it uses a Spanish Market Selection designation of the leaf, being dark and reddish in hue. It’s also one of the more diverse blends from the company (featuring leaves from five countries), including a Brazilian binder and fillers from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Offered in a range of three box-pressed sizes, Maestranza comes across like a more nuanced take on the Mexican-wrapped style, building gradually throughout the smoke to include notes of toasted hickory, cinnamon, candied/spiced nuts, and soft sarsaparilla sweetness. Conversely, as the cigar’s creator, Skip Martin, might suggest, the profile may better be described as having notes of tobacco, tobacco, and more tobacco…
