AVO Cigars has come up with a unique, limited project for 2023 to go with the changing of the seasons. With each season, a cigar is blended for that time of the year. Each of the releases will be in their own packaging, designed for that particular season. They will all come in the same size: a shapely 6⅝″ × 50 diadema format.
The first three months of the year kicked off with the Limited Edition Series 2023 Spring release. The focus was on the idea of spring bringing a reawakening from the harshness of the winter. The hope for AVO Spring was to take the sights and smells of spring and convert them into an experience for the palate.
“We encourage our aficionados to enjoy each cigar while experiencing a moment unique to each season: walking through a garden in spring, watching the setting sun on a summer evening, feeling the air turn crisp as autumn leaves fall, and sitting by a crackling fire in winter.” —Edward Simon, CMO at Oettinger Davidoff
Each seasonal release is specially designed with tobacco aged for up to 14 years. The master blenders at AVO used tobaccos of diverse growing areas from Ecuador and the Dominican Republic to create their vision of what a spring smoking experience should entail.
So far, Spring, Summer, and Fall have been released, and we are currently awaiting the announcement of the Winter release date. Each season comes in 10-count boxes, limited to 4000 boxes per season (1,500 of which make their way to the States).

Appearance
AVO Seasons Spring has a unique shape that catches your eye right away. It has a dark coffee bean color, with a toothy look and feel to the wrapper. Light seams and veins are noted, but it is well designed and constructed for a cigar of this shape. The cigar has two bands: one is the traditional AVO crest in white, gray, and silver, with a secondary band that has bright spring colors of yellow, green, and sea-green blue to represent the spring season. The 10-count boxes have a similar color and AVO-branded symbol, with part of the lid being transparent to reveal the cigars beneath.

Smoking Experience
AVO Spring has a strong mineral earthy aroma with hints of cinnamon and citrus zest. With a proper cut of the cigar, the cold draw brings some cinnamon hot spice to the tongue. With a well-executed toast and light of the diadema, there is a strong, mineral-rich earthy flavor with lighter citrus zest. A savory and strong salivation picks up during the first part of this smoke. The combination of these flavors brings an experience that reminds me of a hot toddy cocktail. The retrohale has a solid white pepper spice.
AVO Spring is very consistent, with not much transition during the first half of the smoking experience. That rich mineral with citrus zest stimulates the salivary glands (being backed by the savory flavors), making for a sensory-forward smoking experience. In this portion, the retrohale is hitting right on point with a great white pepper flavor.
Closing out the AVO Seasons Spring experience, there is still strong, mineral-rich earthy flavors, having less citrus zest than the first half of the cigar, but now with some mild minty note on the backend. The retrohale has now lessened to a light white pepper. This whole experience is reminiscent of a rich rye hot toddy cocktail.
The AVO Seasons Spring had a razor-sharp burn line, with a very cool burn temperature allowing me to get all the aroma from these tobaccos. The draw was essentially perfect—slightly resistant and able to bring the right amount of airflow through a cigar of this shape.
Would I Smoke This Cigar Again?
Absolutely, I’d want to revisit the AVO Seasons Spring cigar again! The smoking experience was really flavorful, with a great mixture of spice, mineral, and citrus that worked in tandem. Although there was not much in the way of transition in the cigar, sometimes a good, consistent cigar from start to finish is what you really want/need. This cigar didn’t quite hit the spring profile for me—though it hit a seasonal flavor of hot toddy that was a home run. All said, I would highly recommend tracking this one down or at least trying to get a fiver.
