For over a year, the saga of Nat Sherman, Altria Group (former parent company of Nat Sherman), and Michael Herklots (former vice president of Nat Sherman) captivated cigar enthusiasts across the country. This began with Altria’s closure of the 90-year-old brand in 2020 and was followed by the announcement of Ferio Tego, a new entity co-founded by Michael Herklots and Brendon Scott (both formerly of Nat Sherman). Fans of the brand were pleased to learn that Ferio Tego had acquired all major Nat Sherman cigar brands, though it was the company’s self-titled Ferio Tego brand that was most anticipated throughout 2021. The line is positioned as an ultra-premium offering that includes two unique smoking experiences: Ferio Tego Elegancia and Ferio Tego Generoso. For the latter, Ferio Tego worked with the Plasencia family and their Nicaraguan factory for production. The Plasencias’ Central American tobaccos were used as well, selecting a Honduran shade-grown wrapper over all-Nicaraguan binder/fillers. Intended to be full in body yet not aggressive in strength, the Generoso delivers on its promise. The cigar lights up with a surprising level of sweetness, reversing the usual development of a strength-first approach. And the smoke texture is comparable to a balanced Trappist ale, seeming to expand with each puff, covering the entirety of the palate. This includes standout flavors of oak, medium-roast coffee, dark caramel, nougat, and chocolate malt sweetness.
