The ubiquitous Undercrown line has come a long way since debuting as a more readily available alternative to Drew Estate’s top-dollar Liga Privada collection in 2011. This included multiple blend variations over the years (one of which ranked as Cigar Dojo’s No. 1 Cigar of the Year selection in 2017), reaching new heights in 2021 with an upgraded 10th-anniversary version of the brand with the Undercrown 10. Described as being “All Dekk’d Out,” the Undercrown 10 improves on both the look and recipe, using high-grade tobaccos throughout the blend. This begins with the brand’s signature San Andrés wrapper, which is sourced from the highest priming of the plant. The binder swaps Habano for Connecticut Broadleaf (compared to the Undercrown Maduro), and the filler is now entirely Nicaraguan. The experience is unmistakably Undercrown, though it has ben cranked up a few notches in terms of flavor and intensity. It’s a gritty smoke, showing dark complexities of hearty earth, espresso, musky leather, dried alfalfa, and rich Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup.
