Since Cigar Dojo debuted in 2012—with the Cigar Dojo app only months later—we’ve witnessed casual cigar enthusiasts (as well as not so casual) grow to become social cigar celebrities, reviewers, shop owners, and even brand owners. One such case was with Mo Maali, launching Patina Cigars in 2017. At the time, Mo was employed as the national sales manager with Mombacho Cigars, producing both a Habano and Connecticut offering with Mombacho’s Casa Favilli factory in Granada, Nicaragua. After a two-year hiatus, the company’s core collection expanded to three blends in 2020, moving to the NACSA factory in Estelí to showcase a maduro blend of undisclosed origins. This is a firecracker of a cigar, being one of the most unmistakably spicy experiences we smoked this year. This is not comparable to the black pepper often associated with Nicaraguan cigars, but more along the lines of cumin, allspice, star anise, and red pepper. But the cigar is a maduro, after all, eventually rounding out to offer additional flavors of charred oak, toasted molasses bread, and baker’s cocoa powder.
