Perhaps the most unique-tasting cigar on our list, Fratello Arlequín had to prove itself on the marketplace before being welcomed on as a full-time offering from Fratello. The cigar tentatively debuted in 2019, being released as part of an experimental four-pack, where consumers were encouraged to provide feedback on two new blends: Arlequín and Sorella. Within the U.S., Arlequín became the clear-cut favorite, receiving two new sizes, a box-press shape, and the proper branding fit for a full-fledged release.
Arlequín’s concept requires a bit of a deep dive to fully appreciate. The name is the Spanish translation of Harlequin, which is the name of a historical character from the 16th Century Italian comedy, Commedia dell’arte (also being the inspiration for the better-known Harley Quinn character of Batman canon). As Harlequin is characterized by his checkered costume, Fratello has incorporated this look throughout the cigar’s presentation. And, like the trickster persona of the cigar’s inspiration, the smoking experience is nimble and unexpected. Ditching the familiar qualities of San Andrés, Arlequín is dialed back in body, showing a smooth and mellow texture, with atypical flavors of chicory, vegetation-rich soil, banana candy sweetness, and an overriding theme of ripe juiciness.
