Differing from the majority of 2019’s most buzz-worthy cigars, Laranja Reserva Escuro hit the market long before the industry’s annual trade show, debuting in the spring (rather than the usual summer and fall releases). The cigar addressed a growing demand for a proper counterpart to Espinosa’s orange-themed Laranja Reserva cigar, reimagining the blend with a box-pressed shape and a Brazilian Mata Fina maduro wrapper. This change allowed for a familiar experience on par with the original, as the Laranja Reserva likewise featured a Brazilian wrapper over Nicaraguan fillers. But the Mata Fina alteration allows for added spice and darker, earthier flavors, highlighted by a wasabi-like spice through the nostrils, baker’s cocoa, mocha, black licorice, and an “it factor” unique tart sweetness in the background that ties it all together. With the original Laranja Reserva being one of Espinosa Premium Cigars’ biggest breakout releases, the maduro counterpart brought with it high expectations; it’s safe to say that the Espinosa team delivered in spades.
