A fuller-bodied maduro experience led by a Mexican wrapper and a multinational interior blend? Not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think La Aurora… but that’s sort of the point, with the Fuerte Sol being the first in the new Family Creed series from La Auroraโsaid to appeal to the American market and the “evolving tastes of the modern connoisseur.” The concept takes shape through the use of a Mexican San Andrรฉs wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and fillers from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Pennsylvania. It’s not simply the regions used, but the intent, being deliberately blended to differentiate itself from the company’s familiar offerings. The strategy clearly paid offโat least from our experienceโbeing bold yet not allowing strength to override the flavor output. The cigar’s box-pressed shape helps maintain a cool smoke temperature, allowing flavors of oak, black pepper, and mocha to light up the palate straight out of the gate. Dense in texture and loaded with flavor, it continues to evolve with notes of smoky BBQ, espresso, caramel-stirred cream, and sweet raisins.
