Protocol Cigars has announced the release of its sixth core line addition, dubbed Crime Scene Unit. The new cigar continues the brandโ€™s law enforcement-inspired theme, this time highlighting the work of forensic investigators who handle evidence at crime scenes.

The release is notable for being Protocolโ€™s first cigar wrapped in Connecticut Broadleaf maduroโ€”an ingredient that company co-founder Juan Cancel says has long been out of reach.

โ€œSince day one I wanted to release a cigar with a Connecticut Broadleaf Wrapper but was always told a company our size could never get it,โ€ Cancel said. After years of trying, he credits A.J. Fernรกndez with helping him finally secure the leaf.

In addition to the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, the Crime Scene Unit features a Mexican San Andrรฉs maduro binder and Nicaraguan Criollo and Corojo fillers from Jalapa and Estelรญ. Itโ€™s produced in a single 6ยฝ” x 50 toro extra vitola and comes in boxes of 10. Each cigar carries an MSRP of $18, with boxes priced at $180.

Hรฉctor J. Alfonso Sr., director of factory operations for Espinosa Premium Cigars, described the blend as rich but balanced, offering a profile thatโ€™s creamy and chocolatey with a bit of edge.

Only 150 boxes are being released initiallyโ€”half of the originally planned 300โ€”due to production limitations. Whether additional runs will follow is unclear, and the company is currently labeling it as a limited production release to be sold exclusively through retailer Smoke Inn Cigars.

Boxes are shipping now and are expected to arrive at retail locations by next week.
