In 2014, Padrón shocked guest attendees with a stunning humidor display, containing a new and limited blend (Padrón 50th Anniversary, aka “The Hammer”) in commemoration of the company’s 50th anniversary. Padrón managed to maintain the buzz in 2015, releasing the company’s first Connecticut shade cigar with Padrón Dámaso. And with such major releases in a relatively short time span, Padrón has taken a bit of a breather in years following.

At the 2016 IPCPR, Padrón’s most notable release was simply a non-box-pressed tubo in the famed 1926 Serie blend (made to commemorate family patriarch José Orlando Padrón’s 90th birth year. The company expanded on this concept for 2017, releasing two new sizes for their 1964 Anniversary Series in tubo format.

Padrón’s booth is the same setup as with years past (at least since 2013). We described it as—

It’s a classy booth, featuring images of the family’s legacy and classic releases such as the Padrón Millenium, locked behind glass displays. The overall feel is like being in an upscale brick & mortar, only the humidor contains 100% Padrón (which, coincidentally, is only about 20% more than your average humidor…).

Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Soberano & Presidente

Two new sizes have been made in the popular Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series blend—a 5″ x 52 robusto and a 6″ x 50 toro. Previously, the closest to these vitolas were the Belicoso (5″ x 52) and Torpedo (6″ x 52) vitolas, but these both showcased figurado-style heads. The unique aspect of this release is that both cigars are presented in square-shaped tubes, rather the traditional, round, aluminum containers used for tubo cigars. Nearly every Padrón cigar, with the exception of releases within the last two years, have been box-pressed and the Soberano & Presidente highlight this quite nicely.

Interestingly, Padrón was not the only company to introduce a square tubo, with AVO Cigars showing a square tubo as well, albeit with more rounded corners.

Other

Padrón showcased Memorable Moments in My Life by José O. Padrón, a new book detailing the family patriarch’s youth in Cuba, his emigration to America, and eventual trails, tribulations, and successes with Padrón Cigars. Two versions of the book have been made: one is premium, leather-bound, signed, and packaged in a collectable, wooden box; the other is a more simplistic hardback. In addition, it has been written in both Spanish (José’s native tongue) and English. Padrón plans to donate 100% of the book’s proceeds to the family’s Padrón Family Foundation, where they plan to build an elementary school in Estelí, Nicaragua. Pricing has not been set as of yet, with the book’s release planned for late September to October.
