Released at this year’s July IPCPR meeting in New Orleans, La Flor Dominicana went darker with its newest release—La Nox. Latin for “the night,” the La Nox is an alluring change for a brand better known for its lighter fare, such as the Double Ligero.

La Flor Dominicana La Nox Breakdown

  • Wrapper: Brazilian Cubra maduro
  • Binder: San Andrés Mexican
  • Filler: Dominican Piloto Cubano | Dominican Pelo de Oro
  • Factory: Tabacalera La Flor (Dominican Republic)
  • Production: Small batch
  • Vitola: 6½” x 50 toro
  • Price: $11

Upon first examination, the cigar is dense but with some give along the body. Following a clean, crisp cut, a peek at the foot of the cigar shows how dark the binder and wrapper are, giving LFD a reason to invoke the night in naming its newest stick.

A clear distinction can be seen between the fillers, binder and wrapper, which lighten toward the center. A pre-light draw had an easy pull that lasted throughout the cigar.

Smoking Experience

The initial few draws off the La Nox had notes of spice and are somewhat harsh, but that mellows within the first inch of the cigar. A good even burn and no need to ash until a few inches into the stick attest to its construction. Moderate amounts of smoke are drawn with each puff. Once the cigar mellows, it is a smooth, medium-full cigar.

Further in, the the notes of spice intensify in the second-third of the cigar, but the intensity of the dark maduro you’d expect continues to mellow. During the second-third, slight hints of dark chocolate can be detected.

La Flor Dominicana La Nox cigar review

The last two inches of the cigar were a little more harsh than the rest, but it remained a smooth smoke until that point. There are also some notes of bitter coffee or espresso in the last third, along with the notes of spice.

The cigar is well constructed, allowing for moderate amounts of smoke that strike just the right balance for the flavor profile. Touch ups between the two La Nox cigars I smoked numbered fewer than three and each cigar only needed to be ashed four or five times per stick. Both cigars had a nice pancake-stacked ash.

Would I smoke this cigar again?

Yes. I found the La Nox to be a good smoke for the price with a not-too-dark experience you sometimes get with such heavy maduros. After each smoke, I did not get that “cigared out” feeling and was able to have a second stick. This is a fun introduction to the LFD brand. Though it does border on the expensive side, taking into account the overall flavor and complexity.

La Flor Dominicana La Nox cigar review and rating

La Flor Dominicana La Nox
Great construction leads the way with this limited edition smoke. Despite its unique presentation (circular box), the cigar's appearance is lacking. There are fun flavors throughout that most will enjoy; though it tends to heat up quickly, making for harsh and unwanted notes at times.
