Hooten Young now holds a U.S. design patent on the shape of its Ma Deuce cigar.
The Jacksonville Beach, Florida company announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued Design Patent No. D1,124,474 S, covering the ornamental design of a cigar shape it calls The Cartridgeโข. The patent was issued April 28, 2026, lists Hooten & Young LLC as the applicant, and carries a 15-year term. The named inventors include Azarias Mustafa Cordoba, known as “Z,” and company co-founder Norman G. Hooten.
A design patent covers how an item looks, so this one protects the cartridge-shaped appearance of the cigar as shown in the official patent drawings. The look comes from the Ma Deuce Cigar Selection, named for the Browning M2 .50-caliber machine gun, which has been in U.S. military service for decades. The cigar is modeled after a .50-cal round, with a rounded, bullet-like head.
The Ma Deuce is a 6ยฝ” x 60 Cartridge with an Ecuador Habano wrapper over Mexican San Andrรฉs, plus a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan filler. It’s rated medium in body, and the company lists rustic florals and white pepper among its flavors.
“This is a meaningful milestone for Hooten Young,” said Norman Hooten, Co-Founder of Hooten Young. “Premium cigars are about more than tobacco alone. They are about experience, memory, and connection. The Cartridgeโข gives us a patented cigar presentation that speaks directly to our brand, our heritage, and the people who understand the meaning behind the Ma Deuce.”
Hooten Young, which also makes whiskey, says it’ll work the patented shape into its brand storytelling, retailer education, consumer events, and future product presentations. The announcement didn’t mention new sizes, pricing, or other cigars that will use The Cartridge. Hooten Young cigars are sold through select premium cigar retailers in the U.S.
