Casa Carrillo is expanding its Pledge Purple line with a new robusto size, joining the original toro format that debuted earlier this year.
Pledge Purple was introduced to mark the fifth anniversary of the Pledge Prequel, which earned Cigar Aficionado’s 2020 Cigar of the Year honors. The two cigars share a connection through their Havana-seed Connecticut wrapper, which comes from the same tobacco crop grown by Dunn & Foster in the Connecticut River Valley.
Following the Pledge Prequel’s recognition, Casa Carrillo reserved a portion of the wrapper tobacco for additional aging. While the original Pledge Prequel used tobacco aged for more than three years, the wrapper used for Pledge Purple has now been aged for nearly a decade.
Despite sharing the same wrapper crop, Pledge Purple features a different blend, pairing the Connecticut-grown tobacco with a Mexican binder and Nicaraguan fillers from Estelรญ, Condega, and Ometepe.
The new robusto measures 5ยผ” x 52 and carries an MSRP of $16.50 per cigar, compared to the original 6″ x 54 toro at $18. Both sizes are packaged in 10-count boxes and will continue to be produced in limited quantities, with additional shipments planned throughout the year.
According to Casa Carrillo, the first batch of Pledge Purple Robusto is being allocated to select retailers, with shipments beginning in October.
