J.C. Newman is adding a new size to its Yagua lineup with the introduction of the Yagua Robusto, a 5″ x 56 vitola that will begin shipping to premium cigar retailers next week.
The new size joins the existing Yagua line while maintaining the same production process that has defined the brand since its debut. The project traces its inspiration to cigars that PENSA factory general manager Lazaro Lopez recalls his grandfather making on the family’s tobacco farm in Cuba during the 1940s.
Unlike traditionally shaped cigars, Yagua is rolled without molds or presses. Each cigar is individually formed and then bundled together while still wet inside a yagua palm leaf, giving every cigar its own shape.
According to J.C. Newman, the process also differs because the cigars use an underfermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that requires additional aging after production.
“Yagua is a difficult cigar to roll because we use an underfermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, blend the filler tobaccos differently, and do not use the usual tools and techniques of a cigar factory,” said fourth-generation J.C. Newman Cigar Co. owner, Drew Newman. “As the wrapper is not fully fermented, we have to age the cigars for a full year after they are rolled.”
The Yagua Robusto carries an MSRP of $10.50 per cigar and is expected to arrive at premium cigar retailers beginning next week.
