Black Label Trading Co.’s return to their roots proved to be a worthy demonstration of Nicaraguan tobacco’s potential, with Orthodox emerging as one of the company’s boldest offerings to date from their fan-favorite Fábrica Oveja Negra facility in Estelí, Nicaragua. True to the brand’s penchant for spiritual nomenclature, Orthodox combines brooding visuals with a traditionalist backbone, exemplifying the dark artistry BLTC has become known for. Creator James Brown has combined Mexican San Andrés wrapper leaf with an Ecuadorian Habano binder and Nicaraguan fillers to craft a blend that exemplifies the company’s signature style. The resulting experience is an intense journey—fuller in flavor than body—that oozes with gooey maduro sweetness from start to finish. The smoke zips across both palate and retrohale with a nice spice, while deep notes of stewed fruit and raisin provide a rich foundation, concluding with a distinctive cream and Swiss Miss hot chocolate powder that ties the profile together seamlessly.
