Despite a growing number of manufacturers introducing cigars themed around the Chinese zodiac calendar, Davidoff remains the most well known, offering zodiac-themed cigars since the Year of the Dragon release in 2011. The 2020 cigar is the Davidoff Year of the Ox Limited Edition 2021, the 10th release in the collection. Each year, Davidoff introduces elaborate designs and packaging for their Zodiac Series, as well as a host of accessories that tie into the zodiac animal of the year. This holds true with the Ox, being rolled in a bull-sized gordo format and packaged in stunning boxes that elicit nothing short of luxury. This impressive presentation centers on a wood base, which curves up the sides of the box, having a mid-century modern feel while simultaneously evoking the imagery of a bull’s horns. And while the presentation aids in the cigar’s luxury status, it is the smoking experience that clinched the award. This begins with a diverse tobacco recipe, including seven tobaccos from three countries throughout the blend. However, the profile is unmistakably Dominican at its core, offering a mild start of pistachio nuts and milk, later building in body and transitioning to flavors of oily butter, wild botanicals, anise, and heavy cream.
