On a special guest appearance for Cigar Dojo’s A Flavor Odyssey show last night, Pete Johnson of Tatuaje Cigars teased the first appearance of the Tatuaje The Karloff dress box.
The Tatuaje The Karloff is set to be released this Halloween in place of the usual Monster Series cigar, as the fan-favorite collection came to an end in 2019. Pete mentioned that the Monster Series will take a year hiatus and return in 2021, where the series will cycle back from the beginning with The Frank. This is fitting, as The Frank is the first cigar in the series, being released in “year one” (2021).
The Karloff has roots tracing back nearly as far as the Monster Series itself, as Tatuaje launched The Boris cigar in 2008 as a spinoff followup to The Frank. The idea was to release a cigar named after the actor that portrayed each monster in the Monster Series, subsequently launching the Actor Series. But the series was short lived, with The Boris being the only official release. In 2012, Tatuaje released the Little Boris, featuring the same blend as The Boris but in a smaller size. And in 2018, Tatuaje re-released the Little Boris with an updated look.
The Karloff is therefore essentially the second release in the Actor Series, offering the same blend of Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over all-Nicaraguan binders/fillers. However, the blend was described as being slightly amped up from the original The Boris cigar. The cigars have been rolled in a 6⅝” x 49 format, fitting just in between the 7″ x 49 original and 5½″ × 49 Little Boris. The cigars’ boxes were shown off by Pete on his phone at the 1:02:48 mark in the Flavor Odyssey episode, making it somewhat difficult to get a completely clear image. But the boxes were described as not being full-fledged coffins, as are seen with each year’s monster release. They are not as simplistic as the plain-style monster boxes though, landing somewhere in between. The Karloff shows a high-contrast visual of Boris Karloff’s face in black paint on what appeared to be a white box. The cigars have been finalized and resting for some time, as Pete noted they should be smoking spectacularly by their October release.
