It’s official. Espinosa Premium Cigars and General Cigar Company are teaming for the first time—collaborating on an atypical cigar known as Warzone.
News of the cigar first broke in early September on Cigar Dojo’s Smoke Night LIVE show, as guest Héctor J. Alfonso Sr. (Director of Operations at Espinosa Premium Cigars) revealed that the two companies were working together to offer a cigar unlike anything within the Espinosa portfolio. The cigars have now been revealed as Warzone, themed around the Ten Years’ War of 1868 to 1878, where Cuba fought for independence from Spain.
The surprising juxtaposition of Espinosa’s boutique style and General’s large reach was brought on through a myriad of relationships between the two companies, including Jack Toraño’s involvement with General until earlier this year, when he joined Espinosa as director of sales. Warzone’s creation is described as “coming from the two company’s mutual respect for one another,” with Héctor J. Alfonso Sr. telling Cigar Dojo regarding the two companies’ relationship, “Jack’s relationship with Senior Brand Manager Justin Andrews and Justin’s relationship with Erik [Espinosa] really brought this project home—so many moving parts.”
In terms of blending, Warzone combines a select African Cameroon wrapper from General’s vast tobacco inventory with a core recipe from Espinosa. This includes a Honduran binder and fillers of both Nicaragua and Colombia. Warzone has been rolled in robusto and toro formats at Espinosa’s boutique La Zona factory in Estelí. The cigars are packaged in 20-count boxes, with 1,500 boxes per size slated to begin shipping on November 12th. However, Espinosa will give first access of Warzone to attendees of the company’s annual La Zona Palooza festival (Nov. 7–9) during the second day of the event.
