Among the many legacy brands that have been updated in recent years, allowing Master Blender A.J. Fernández to provide his signature touch, the H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez has proved among the most popular.
Since the cigar’s debut in 2017, the line has received multiple size additions, including a tin-packaged version at this year’s IPCPR trade show. The line is now receiving a limited-edition makeover, with Fernández showcasing a special vintage tobacco leaf from his prized La Lilia farm in Nicaragua.
H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez Finca La Lilia 2009 incorporates the same primary blend as A.J.’s original spin on the H. Upmann brand, including an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 binder, and fillers of Nicaragua and the DR. But the Finca La Lilia 2009 benefits from the addition of tobaccos from the first crop (2009 vintage) of Fernandez’s iconic Esteli-based farm. In addition, the Sumatran wrapper is said to be selected from a darker shade than normally used for the regular-production line.
There will be 3,750 boxes of 20 cigars available at launch, made in a singular 6″ x 60 “Magnum” format. Consumers can expect the cigars to begin shipping by the end of September, retailing for $12 per cigar MSRP ($240 per 20-ct box).
