This year marked the 13th annual edition of The Great Smoke, a mega-style cigar event that is held in South Florida and put on by local retailer Smoke Inn Cigars. The event began by simply gathering together some of the industry’s biggest names and the most die-hard enthusiasts in one central location—namely, one of Smoke Inn’s own retail shops.
Over the years, the event has grown well beyond this capacity, moving to the American German Club in 2015 and further expanding to the South Florida Fairgrounds in 2018. The Great Smoke is no longer a single-day affair, with pre-parties and afterparties that stretch throughout the week of the event. This began with a kickoff party on Thursday, hosted by Drew Estate; Friday offered VIP guests a private dinner (hosted by LFD), as well as a public event hosted by Rocky Patel; Saturday is the event itself, beginning with a live taping of the KMA Talk Radio show; there are then multiple afterparty events for show attendees to choose from, including one hosted by Recluse Cigars and another hosted by Hiram & Solomon Cigars; the festivities are concluded on Sunday, as Smoke Inn hosted a ticketed brunch, including all-you-can-eat breakfast and bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys.
At the event, guests are given a bag that includes cigar accessories and a ticket book at entry. The tickets are then redeemed for cigars at the various booths throughout the event. Essentially, there were two large, covered spaces, located side by side. One space includes the cigar manufacturers and a central location to make purchases (with incentivized discounts). The other side holds tables for smokers to gather, a VIP area, a stage for live music, food, spirits and beer stations, and other fun activities (including a genuine money booth, where guests could win prizes for collecting the most “Abe Bucks”). The event concluded with a lengthy raffle, where three DOJONATION members claimed some of the biggest prizes, including the grand prize of a 70-inch 4K television!
