After more than a decade away, the Juan Lopez brand is returning to the U.S. market. Originally founded in 1876 by Spanish entrepreneur Juan Lopez Sena, the brand has long been regarded as a boutique favorite among cigar enthusiasts. While it may not have reached the global fame of other Cuban heritage lines, Juan Lopez has maintained a dedicated following for its small-batch approach and refined flavor profiles.
Now produced in the Dominican Republic, this new iteration aims to strike a balance between the traditional Cuban character and the tastes of todayโs premium cigar smoker.
โWhen creating a new version of a cherished heritage cigar, it is important to retain many of the elements that made it so beloved in the first place,โ said Nick Libretti, Senior Brand Manager. โOur goal was to create something for the U.S. that a traditional Cuban cigar smoker will recognize and enjoy, while also having a blend and style that resonates with the modern consumer.โ
The cigars are being made at Tabacalera Isla under the supervision of Hostos Fernandez Quesada, a respected figure who previously worked in his familyโs legendary Quesada factory before founding his own. Quesadaโs recent projects with brands such as Warped and Matilde have received multiple 90+ ratings, signaling a strong pedigree behind this relaunch.
โIt has been such an honor to work with this team on this important project,โ said Hostos. โWorking with a legendary brand like Juan Lopez is such a great fit for us as a factory and we are very excited to showcase this blend to the world.โ
The new blend combines three different Dominican fillers for a rich, nutty profile, a Habano binder for spice and balance, and an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper that adds leather and natural sweetness. The cigars will be available in the same three vitolas as the original line:
- Campanas (5.5 x 52) โ MSRP $12.50 per cigar / $304.50 per box
- Maximos (6 x 48) โ MSRP $12.25 per cigar / $299.25 per box
- Seleccion Especial (6.75 x 52) โ MSRP $12.75 per cigar / $309.75 per box
Each size will also be offered in custom-made four-packs, slated for release later this year. Distribution will be handled exclusively by Santa Clara Cigars.
