Altadis USA, makers of many of the world’s most recognizable legacy cigar brands (Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann), is set to unveil a new project under the Trinidad name, with the Trinidad Espiritu launching shortly before the 2019 IPCPR trade show.
Trinidad Espiritu has been inspired from vintage Latin Caribbean culture, taking cues from the late ’60s to early ’70s era (aka the “Golden Years” of cigars). Bright and bold packaging adorn the new lineup of five cigars, with renowned blender A.J. Fernández handling production at his factory in Estelí.
The cigars will showcase a Nicaraguan puro blend—a signature style for Fernández. The release is set for mid-June, beginning a nationwide tour for Trinidad Espiritu. These events are likewise inspired by vintage Latin Caribbean culture, including “décor, music, vintage uniformed bartenders, cocktails and more.” And while the series includes five sizes, one has been reserved specifically as an event exclusive, offered in a 7½” x 40 “Fundador” lancero (a famed size in the original, Cuban-made Trinidad brand). This special size is joined by the Robusto (5″ x 52), Toro (6″ x 52), Belicoso (6⅛” x 52), and Magnum (6″ x 60).
The Trinidad brand was created in roughly the same time period (thought to be in 1969) as its sister brand—Cohiba—with both being rolled at the famed El Laguito factory in Cuba. Like Cohiba, Trinidad cigars were originally rolled exclusively as diplomatic gifts from Castro (first offered for sale to the public in 1998 with the Trinidad Fundadores). In addition to controlling a 50-percent stake in Habanos S.A. (representing the Cuban-made Trinidad brand), parent company Altadis USA produces Trinidad for the American market at its factory in the Dominican Republic. In recent years, the company has released many updated versions of brands such as Montecristo and RyJ, with Trinidad Espiritu marking a renewed focus on the Trinidad name.
