Villiger Cigars has announced that the company will be bringing La Meridiana—a popular brand in the European market—to the U.S.
La Meridiana was first released in Europe in 1998 and has since become a favorite among fuller-bodied smokers in the region. The cigars were designed by Heinrich Villiger, inspired by the once-booming Cuban factory of the same name.
The factory owned by Pedro Murias, was once of the largest and most well-known cigar factories, which determined the cityscape of Havana at the end of the 19th century. Sadly, Murias was forced to sell La Meridiana factory due to unrest in Cuba during the Cuban war of Independence. The sale went through shortly after the war ended in 1898, and just like that, Pedro Murias along with the original La Meridiana cigar factory became a fading memory.
Villiger La Meridiana was designed to honor full-flavored Cuban cigars of old, using a Nicaraguan puro blend to capture an elegant, yet full-flavored experience. The cigars are said to feature a special aging process, where the wrapper leaf is aged for four years.
La Meridiana is set to debut to American smokers later this month, introducing a lineup of five vitolas, with prices ranging from $6.50 to $10.60.
