The famed Robaina family has partnered with the Burmese Tobacco Trading Company to introduce a truly unique collaboration, which will make its appearance in 2018 as “Don Alejo Robaina.”

Don Alejo Robaina has been named to honor the late Don Alejandro Robaina, whom was among the most famed growers of Cuban tobacco in history, fondly remembered as “The Godfather of Cuban tobacco.”

Reportedly, members of the Robaina family have partnered with the Huang family, owners of the Chinese-American group Burmese Tobacco Trading Company. Most interestingly, the project is set to take place in the unique growing region of Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, a country that borders south of China and west of Thailand. Pyin Oo Lwin is a small town with a relatively high altitude and is said to be quite similar in climate to Cuba’s famed Pinar del Río growing region.

The Don Alejo Robaina project has been estimated to have a 2018 release date, with cigars being distributed to Europe, North America, and Asian markets.

UPDATE: following the announcement of Burmese Tobacco Trading Company’s Don Alejo Robaina project, Hirochi Robaina (grandson of Don Alejandro Robaina) has issued a response, distancing himself from the project. Though Burmese Tobacco’s initial press release made no mention of Hirochi’s involvement, he has voiced his disapproval as such—

There is not any project where I am involved with these people. These people branded Alejandro Robaina without my concern. I visited Myanmar in 2013 and I could see by myself that it is not a good land for growing tobacco. They are not honest because they have done this behind me.Hirochi Robaina
