Avowed Hallowed Hands Corona Gorda

This, friends, is my first legitimate cigar review.

Let me explain what I mean by that. I don’t want anyone thinking I picked up a cutter and lighter yesterday and decided to start reviewing cigars.

Before I had a brand, before I joined Cigar Dojo, and before Protocol Cigars became what it became, I was an active cigar nerd on social media. I posted cigars, talked cigars, argued about cigars, studied cigars, and wrote what I called “micro reviews.” These were short write-ups focused primarily on the flavors I picked up from each cigar. I did that for years and even published my own Top 10 list.

Then I started Protocol Cigars, helped build the brand, eventually sold it… and here we are.

This brings me to Avowed Cigars, one of the boutique brands that has gained attention over the last couple of years. Cigar Dojo named Avowed the Up-and-Coming Cigar Brand of the Year for 2025, and I included the company among my Top 5 Boutique Brands to Watch in 2026.

Hallowed Hands is described as the fullest-bodied cigar in the Avowed lineup to date, and when Dave West of Avowed Cigars told me it was right in my wheelhouse, my ears perked up. Now, let me explain something. People tell me cigars are in my wheelhouse all the time. Sometimes they’re right. Sometimes I light it up and say to myself, “My brother, what wheelhouse were you talking about? Because this ain’t mine.”

So, was Dave right? Let’s get into it.

Hallowed Hands Corona Gorda Breakdown

The cigar is made at Kelner Cigars, S.A.S. in the Dominican Republic. Its blend combines an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper, an Ecuadorian Habano binder, and fillers of Corojo ’99, San Vicente, Piloto Cubano, Criollo ’98, and Pennsylvania Broadleaf. It’s an interesting collection of varietals, particularly for hobbyists who enjoy digging into the individual components of a blend.

Appearance

Hallowed Hands arrives in 15-count boxes, with each cigar wearing one of 15 fingerprint-inspired bands. The design carries some additional meaning for me. As a retired police officer, fingerprints were once part of my everyday life, and the imagery immediately brought back memories of processing arrests at the precinct. The dark background, gold accents, and ornate detailing give the cigar a distinctive presentation.

The 5¾” x 46 corona gorda is a size I tend to enjoy because its wrapper-to-binder-to-filler ratio often allows every component of a blend to show itself without any one component taking over. The medium-brown wrapper has a light oily sheen, subtle veins, tight seams, and a consistently firm feel from head to foot. Aromas from the wrapper include earth, leather, and cocoa, while the foot adds espresso, dark chocolate, and mild sweetness. The pre-light draw is slightly snug, offering notes of cocoa, pepper, and dark tobacco.

Smoking Experience

Hallowed Hands opens with earth, espresso, cocoa, pepper, leather, and a restrained sweetness. The Pennsylvania Broadleaf appears to contribute some additional depth and darker character, though the opening is not as heavy or forceful as the cigar’s billing might suggest.

Espresso and earth remain at the center of the profile as the cigar develops. The cocoa gradually shifts toward a darker baker’s chocolate character, while leather becomes more noticeable through the middle portion. Pepper settles into the background after the opening, appearing mostly through the finish and retrohale. Occasional touches of sweetness help prevent the profile from becoming overly dry.

The flavors are generally clear and well integrated, though the cigar produces less smoke than I prefer. This makes the experience feel somewhat restrained, particularly when combined with the slightly snug draw. It never becomes tight enough to create a major concern, but it does require a little more effort than ideal.

Hallowed Hands settles around medium-plus in flavor and body, with medium strength. Construction was acceptable across the five corona gordas smoked for this review, but it was not flawless. The cigars generally maintained a serviceable burn, though one or two touchups were needed along the way. Combined with the slightly snug draw and unsatisfyingly low smoke output, these issues kept the smoking experience from feeling as complete as the flavor profile suggested it could be.

Even with those shortcomings, Hallowed Hands remains in the darker flavor range I tend to enjoy. The earth, espresso, chocolate, leather, and pepper work well together, and the cigar delivers enough development to remain interesting throughout much of the smoke.

Would I Smoke This Cigar Again?

Yes.

Hallowed Hands is my favorite Avowed cigar to date. It offers a darker, medium-plus profile that fits my preferences without becoming particularly strong or aggressive. It would work well after dinner or later in the evening for those looking for richer flavors without the strength commonly associated with a truly full-bodied cigar.

At $17, however, the construction and smoke-production issues become more noticeable. The cigar delivered an enjoyable flavor profile across the five samples, but the slightly snug draw, occasional touchups, and low smoke output prevented it from fully meeting the expectations created by its premium price.

Hallowed Hands shows an interesting direction for Avowed and provides a more substantial option within the company’s portfolio. The blend is worth trying for enthusiasts who favor earth, espresso, dark chocolate, leather, and pepper, though I would recommend beginning with a sampler before committing to a larger purchase.
