On March 31, 2025, a major fire erupted at the Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, igniting in the morning and inflicting heavy damage on one of the world’s largest cigar factories. The fire reportedly began in the packaging area and spread to a rolling room, with videos revealing widespread destruction inside.
According to local reports, all 1,500 workers and 70 children from the factory’s kindergarten were safely evacuated. Firefighters are working to douse the flames, while employees salvaged tobacco bales, equipment, and furniture to limit losses. Though the damage is considered “significant” or “massive,” its full scope is still unknown, suggesting a serious blow to operations.
Situated in northwest Estelí, this key AJ Fernandez facility produces cigars for major brands like Altadis U.S.A. The fire’s cause remains undetermined.
