JR Cigar’s Revival 70s debuted in 2024, marking the first release in a decade-by-decade journey from the company. The series begins with a focus on the 1970s, paying homage to the company’s founding in 1971. But JR went further than a clever title, going so far as to revive the tobacco blending preferences and design aesthetics of the era. Highlighting the Connecticut-wrapped cigars of the time, JR partnered with the Quesada family of the Dominican Republic to bring the cigars to life (who, not coincidentally, celebrated their own 50th anniversary throughout 2024). But the cigar’s delicate, creamy profile wasn’t the only aspect that caught our attention, as the company employed some fairly innovative design choices on the packaging itself. The box’s exterior captures the era’s distinctive automotive aesthetic, with racing-inspired orange and cream colorways accented by dynamic stripes that echo the bold graphic styling of the 1970s. However, it’s the structural engineering itself that sets this release apart—the lid splits centrally with dual-hinged flaps that open outward, creating an impressive reveal of the ten cigars housed within. The illusion of luxury continues with structured black paper dividers separating each cigar, providing both protection and presentation typically reserved for ultra-premium releases. Most impressive is how these premium design elements are achieved through clever use of wrapped cardboard construction rather than traditional wooden boxes (creating a disconnect when the box’s unexpected lightness contradicts its luxurious appearance), allowing JR to deliver a sophisticated unboxing experience at a mid-range price point that aligns with the broader goals of the series.
