After more than a decade on the scene, Espinosa Premium Cigars now operates between two Nicaraguan factories: San Lotano and La Zona. In recent years, the company has increasingly relied on the former; however, their core line remains closely associated with the La Zona factory, which was expanded in 2024 to include a Sumatra-wrapped blend. Joining sister blends such as the Espinosa Habano, Crema, and Especial, the Espinosa Sumatra highlights the beloved Nicaraguan core recipe that helped catapult the company into the limelight during their 2012 debut. Erik Espinosa himself likens the experience to The Colonel’s secret recipe of “11 herbs and spices,” which may as well be boosted by an spice or two with the Espinosa Sumatra cigar. It’s a zesty experience, showing off the spicy-sweet qualities of the wrapper nicely. Combined with the all-Nicaraguan core, we found the cigar to be balanced and medium bodied, offering notes of red pepper, cedar, nutmeg, and candied nuts through the finish.
