With Tatuaje’s 10th anniversary coming only a year after The Dojo got its start, it’s hard to believe another decade has now come and gone. As with previous milestones for the company, the 20th came with cigars to celebrate, including a regular production out of Nicaragua and some limiteds from Miami.

The headliner release was the Nicaraguan-made Tatuaje 20th Anniversary, which followed in the theme of the aforementioned Tatuaje 10th Anniversary from 2013. This includes the same band design (albeit swapping color schemes and anniversary designation) and a two-vitola lineup—this time featuring the Grande Merveille (6⅛” x 46) and Grand Chasseur (6⅜” x 54). Each size is rolled with an extended wrapper that covers the conventionally-cut foot of the cigar, boasting a dark-hued Ecuadorian Habano cover and all-Nicaraguan binders/fillers.

This is one of those occasions where Tatuaje shows why they’re among the founders of the boutique market, with the 20th Anniversary being bold, balanced, and flavorful in all the right places. Despite our body rating of 4/5, the strength feels a half-tick below this, allowing flavors to take center stage. The profile leans slightly to the dark side, offering a weighty mouthfeel and long-lasting complexities of mineral, raw peppercorn, burnt caramel, and an irresistible salty-sweet sensation from the cut tobacco on the lips.
