Since 2017, the renowned Plasencia family of Central America have showcased specific vintages of their prized tobacco farms throughout Honduras and Nicaragua via the Plasencia Cosecha line. This began with the Plasencia Cosecha 146, and has since expanded to include the Plasencia Cosecha 149 in 2021 and the Plasencia Cosecha 151 in 2023. The name Cosecha is Spanish for Harvest, with each release in the line using tobaccos exclusively from a single vintage. As the Plasencias are among the oldest families in the premium tobacco agriculture business—dating back to 1865 Cuba—they have catalogued each of their harvests over the past 158-plus years, highlighting certain banner crop seasons with the Cosecha line.
One such crop was grown in 2016 and harvested in 2017, being the Plasencias’ 151st harvest. Like the Cosecha 149, the 151 focuses on leaves exclusively from the family’s Honduran farms. While not going so far as to list specific farms or seed varietals, it has been noted that the blend is similar to the 149 cigar, differentiating itself with lower-priming leaves and the given vintage. This is most comparable to wine, where two releases can be near-identical in recipe, offering unique experiences simply through the varying conditions of the harvest season. We found the Plasencia Cosecha 151 to be a bit sweeter than its predecessor, offering a concentrated smoke output and hearty, well-balanced flavors of mineral-rich soil, toasted oak, brown sugar, and jammy stone fruit.
