Apart from being undeniably fun to say, the SakaKhan cigar arrives with a multifaceted backstory as to the unusual name. You see, Steve Saka’s (owner and founder of Dunbarton) Navy days of the ’80s just so happened to coincide with the rise in popularity of R&B artist Chaka Khan. Combined with the somehow-not-so-surprising fact that Steve’s middle name (Temujin) is shared by the birth name of Genghis Khan… Steve’s enlisted Navy peers couldn’t resist bestowing him the nickname. The cigar itself is the third addition to the Mi Querida line, which kicked off in 2016 with the original Mi Querida and expanded to include the Mi Querida Triqui Traca in 2019. In 2021, the Mi Querida Black first appeared as a limited edition for JR Cigars’ 50th anniversary, being dubbed Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Limited Edition “EM” Maduros. This is the blend that would become the SakaKhan, making use of the Mi Querida line’s signature Broadleaf wrapper and being joined by a Mexican binder and multinational fillers of Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. At a whopping 7¼” x 54, the cigar is an impressive sight to behold, burning for nearly two and a half hours when smoked slow and deliberately. Despite the dark appearance, the profile tends to hover around the medium-to-medium-plus range, being supremely balanced and satisfying, with standout flavors of loamy earth, black pepper, dark chocolate, and plenty of roasty components throughout.
