As one of the first companies to partner with the Aganorsa Leaf factory of Nicaragua—handling production of nearly every HVC cigar since their 2011 debut—it came as quite the surprise when HVC announced their headlining cigar for 2022 would be rolled at a new Nicaraguan factory… their own boutique factory: Fábrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. de Reinier Lorenzo. Paying tribute to Cubans of old, the HVC Selección No. 1 is simplistic and straightforward in name and look, alluding to a focus on the tobaccos and craftsmanship. These two facets are indeed the cigar’s strong points, lighting up with a powerful punch through the retrohale and not letting up throughout the entirety of the experience. Using a dark and toothy San Andrés maduro wrapper, the HVC Selección No. 1 comes across as one of the fullest-flavored cigars from HVC to date. This is especially concentrated in the 5⅝” x 46 Esenciales format, offering a maintenance-free performance and firing through the nostrils with flavors of mineral-rich soil, black pepper, toasted oak, and plenty of chocolate-vanilla sweetness through the finish.
