The 10-year relationship between Mombacho Cigars and Claudio Sgroi has ended, as the company announced in a press release today that Sgroi will step down from his role as master blender and president on April 1, 2021.
Claudio began as a consultant for Mombacho in 2011, eventually serving as master blender and director of operations from 2012 to 2016, and his most recent role from 2016 until this point.
During Sgroi’s time with Mombacho, he worked to develop brands such as Liga Maestro, Mombacho 10th Anniversary Magnifico, Casa Favilli, and the Cosecha Series. Mombacho also credits him with “[discovering] and [leading] the renovation of Casa Favilli, a colonial mansion classified as a historical monument in Granada, Nicaragua, which today serves as the Mombacho Cigars factory.”
Claudio will continue his role as president of the Nicaraguan Tobacco Chamber (CNT), an organization created in 2008 that represents the interests of 25 Nicaraguan manufacturers, which are said to make up 95 percent of the total national tobacco and cigar production from Nicaragua. The organization also puts on the annual Puro Sabor festival, where cigar enthusiasts from around the world gather to appreciate Nicaraguan tobacco and culture.
The news follows the Jan. 26th announcement that company founder, Cam Heaps, would take the role of company president.
