One of the biggest stories of 2018 was Joya de Nicaragua and their year-long celebration of the company’s historic 50th anniversary, famously being the first and oldest cigar manufacturer in Nicaragua. The headlining act of the celebratory releases was the Cinco Décadas line, being offered in two sizes (Diadema and El General) that paid tribute to the company’s beginnings.

As hinted upon the cigar’s release, Joya has since followed up with additional sizes to Cinco Décadas in the years following—introducing the Fundador size in 2019 and now the El Doctor for 2020. The company also claims they will continue this strategy up through their next milestone, assumed to be their 55th anniversary in 2023.

Each size in the collection is named in commemoration of the company’s history, such as El Fundador paying tribute to the company’s founders, Diadema being the first shape rolled at the factory, and El General reminding JDN of “one of the pioneers of tobacco in Nicaragua.” El Doctor is named after Dr. Alejandro Martínez Cuenca, chairman and owner of the company since the early ’90s, being largely responsible for returning JDN to its former glory.
Cinco Décadas El Doctor features the same select Nicaraguan puro blend—said to use the company’s most premium tobaccos—as former sizes, being rolled in a 6″ x 52 torpedo format. The cigars have been rolled in small batches annually since the beginning, and 2020 is no different, with 600 boxes of 10 cigars per size (24,000 cigars between all sizes) being rolled by the company’s most talented torcedores. El Doctor will be first showcased by Executive President, Juan Ignacio Martínez, along with Drew Estate’s sales team, as hosted through digital events throughout July. The cigars will then be offered exclusively by Drew Diplomat-authorized retailers in August, priced at $20 per cigar MSRP ($200 per box).
