In commemoration of the city of Havana being founded on November 16, 1519, HVC Cigars introduced the HVC 500 Years Anniversary in the fall of 2019. Such a release should come as little surprise to followers of the boutique-minded company, as the name HVC (Havana City) itself pays homage to company owner, Reinier Lorenzo’s native home of Havana, Cuba.

As he has done since first launching his company in 2011, Lorenzo worked closely with the Fernández family to bring his vision to life. This includes the usage of the Fernándezes’ prized AGANORSA tobaccos throughout the entirety of the cigar, as well as production at the family’s Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (TABSA) factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. These tobaccos are often praised as being the closest representation of Cuba’s famed Vuelta Abajo tobaccos, incorporating similar agricultural practices and growing Cuban-seed Corojo ’99 and Criollo ’98 nearly exclusively at their many farms throughout Nicaragua. With HVC 500 Years Anniversary, Lorenzo selected a blend primarily harvested from the AGANORSA fields of Jalapa—a region known for yielding Nicaragua’s sweetest tobacco. This is evidenced through a Corojo ’99 Jalapa wrapper, Jalapa binder, and Jalapa filler. Finally, these sweet-natured leaves are contrasted by Estelí-grown leaves in the filler—being known as Nicaragua’s most intense growing region.

The final blend undergoes a strict sorting process before being rolled into a 5⅞” x 52 vitola that HVC has dubbed Tesoros. The resulting smoking experience is immaculate, offering a chewy smoking texture that lingers on the palate long after each draw. The profile is medium in intensity, yet increasingly rich in flavor, firing off flavors of pepper spice, freshly cut cedar, sourdough, sweetened condensed milk, and layers upon layers of nuts. The latter is prominent enough to be broken down into its own category, overwhelming the senses with peanuts, creamy hazelnuts, almonds, and a more fibrous, salty demeanor of peanut shells.
