In 2017, Matt Booth (owner of the Room101 brand) upended the craft cigar scene on multiple fronts—first by exiting the industry, then rejoining roughly six months later, followed by a star-studded collaboration with Robert Caldwell (owner of Caldwell Cigar Co.) and A.J. Fernández (owner of AJF Cigar Co.) shortly thereafter. This cigar was known simply as “The T.,” using a Nicaraguan puro blend and being rolled at Fernández’s burgeoning factory in Estelí. When announced, the cigars were billed as “limited edition,” but only one year later, The T. returned with a regular-production, Connecticut-wrapped alternative.
Like the original, The T. Connecticut is a true collaboration, not being listed under any of the three contributor’s own brands. Instead, the cigar promotes the men themselves, all of which have become premiere names in the world of premium cigars. As the cigar’s name suggests, The T. Connecticut is highlighted by an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. This shade-grown leaf is rolled over an all-Nicaraguan binder and filler recipe, a signature feature of cigars made at A.J. Fernández’s factory.
In today’s market, the phrase, “not your grandaddy’s Connecticut,” is no longer surprising, but almost expected from enthusiasts. This is the approach for The T. Connecticut, using a hearty Nicaraguan core to boost the flavor output of the traditionally mild character of Connecticuts of yesteryear. But while the style is no longer out of the norm, it remains equally impressive when a blend can showcase creamy, mouthwatering flavors at such a high (and consistent) level of intensity as The T. Connecticut. Big and unmistakeable blasts of citrus, white pepper, cream cheese, brown sugar, and tart candies delight the palate from start to finish—offering the long and creamy finish expected from a proper Connecticut, boosted to a level befitting of the flavor-hungry palate of the modern enthusiast.
