It’s no small secret that manufacturers in the premium cigar industry take anniversaries with pride, whipping up special smoking treats for enthusiasts whenever the opportunity presents itself. It then goes without saying, when a company strikes monumental milestones such as the half-century mark (a feat that few have attained, outside the realm of the original Cuban marcas), one can be sure that said company will be serving up their most extravagant creation(s) in celebratory fashion.
While this holds true for all respectable manufacturers, the circumstance is further compounded when taking into account the reputation of Davidoff Cigars—known as the gold standard in the world of ultra-premium, luxury-class cigars. To mark the occasion, Davidoff master blenders Hendrik “Henke” Kelner and Eladio Díaz looked back to one of the brand’s most famed releases—Diademas Finas. This cigar originally debuted in 2006 to commemorate what would have been company founder Zino Davidoff’s 100th birthday (1906–1994). The decision was then unquestionable, when crafting the blend to commemorate Davidoff’s 50th anniversary in 2018.
For Davidoff Diademas Finas (2018), the cigars have been rolled in the company’s signature diademas finas format—the same used for the 2006 original—with 8,000 jars of 10 cigars being being released worldwide. The blend consists primarily of Dominican tobaccos, including a special selection of aged filler leaves from a banner crop year in 2005. The cigars are then wrapped in a bronze-hued Ecuadorian Habano leaf and packaged in contemporary, humidity-sealed jars. This presentation is superb, playing a role in our consideration for the “Luxury Cigar of the Year” award. But, as expected, it is the smoking experience itself that has won us over. A soft and subtle smoking texture brings exceptionally complex and long-lasting flavors of buttered crackers, vanilla sweetness, florals, and atypical flavors resembling that of a proper Belgian ale. Each puff shows an exceptionally clean palate, with the cigar eventually evolving to show a medium-light to medium body and oily flavors of sweet custard, cappuccino, and nougat.
Far too often do luxury-priced cigars give the impression that the majority of their extravagant price point resides in the packaging and branding. But Diademas Finas is the exception, giving one of the most impressive smoking experiences ever tested on Cigar Dojo (as evidenced by its 96-point score—being tied for the all-time best). If Davidoff is considered the leader in celebratory smoking experiences, Davidoff Diademas Finas is fit for a celebration of celebrations.
