Continuing the celebrations for Davidoff’s 50th Anniversary year, the company has announced the return of the sought-after Selección 702 Limited Edition 2009 cigar.
Originally released in 2009, the Selección 702 boasted a (then) new hybrid wrapper, code-named 702. This special wrapper leaf was created by Davidoff’s agronomists and is grown at the Finca San Juan farm in the Ecuadorian province of Cotopaxi. The Davidoff 702 “Habano” seed is unique in that it is a three-part hybrid; it is built from a two-part Cuban seed hybrid (code-named “125”), which is then further crossed with another Habano varietal to form the 702.
The nutrient rich soil—containing ash from the famous active volcano of the same name—and the persistent blanket of cloud characteristic of the region, offer the perfect growing conditions that result in the incredibly rich and intense wrapper leaves with a wonderful, silky texture grown from the seeds.
The Davidoff Limited Edition series began in 1999 and have recently consisted of the sub-series of Chinese Zodiac-themed cigars (Year of the Rooster (2016), Year of the Dog (2017), etc.). When the Selección 702 Limited Edition first debuted in 2009, Davidoff did not provide exact release quantities; whereas this year’s re-release will see the cigars limited to 2,000 boxes of 10 cigars.
The Selección 702 Limited Edition will use the same, singular size as the original release—a 6⅝” x 48 Toro Especial. The cigar’s blend is said to be the same as the original release, but the wrapper is listed as “aged 702 wrapper leaves for an even smoother and more intense experience.”
Despite the Selección 702 Limited Edition 2009 being limited, the company went on to use the exclusive 702 wrapper on other releases, such as the AVO Classic Covers Volume 1 & 2, as well as Davidoff’s 2017 introduction of the 702 Series; which replaced classic “White Label” blends’ Connecticut wrappers with the 702 hybrid leaf.
