Born out of necessity when we lacked the ingredients for a traditional old fashioned cocktail, the White Trash Old Fashioned emerged. We realized that nearly all this old-school cocktail’s ingredients could be replaced by one: ice-pop-style popsicles! (aka Otter Pops, freezies, Zooper Doopers, Ice Pops, Fla-Vor-Ice, etc.).

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 orange popsicles
  • ½ red popsicle
  • 3 to 4 ounces burbon
  • Bitters
  • Ice (optional)

Directions

  1. Cut popsicles into 3rds or 4ths and add to old fashioned glass.
  2. Add bourbon, stir, and let sit for about a minute (once the ice is added the popsicles will no longer melt into the drink, so this stage determines the amount of sugar/flavor the cocktail will take on).
  3. Add a few shakes of bitters and stir (get weird with it and experiment with multiple bitters flavors!).
  4. Add a block or two of ice (this locks in the popsicles so that the drink doesn’t become increasingly sweet/flavored. Also, we don’t want the popsicles to fully melt so that they remain as the trashy garnish required to properly impress your less-sophisticated drinking partners).
