Each year since its founding in 1933—with the exception of 2020—the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) has held its annual trade show, connecting cigar and pipe tobacconists across the country with manufacturers. The event is the largest of its kind, where retailers are incentivized to make the bulk of their yearly purchases through special show deals, often including limited products that can only be acquired by PCA attendees. It has also, historically, served as the launchpad for the majority of new product from manufacturers each year.
Notably, the show has gone through a tumultuous past two years. This began at the 2019 event, where the organization changed its name from IPCPR to PCA. More contentious was the announcement that the show would expand to include a consumer-focused day (dubbed CigarCon) at the 2020 event and beyond. This was met with significant pushback throughout the industry, and was eventually placed on hold indefinitely. In Jan. 2020, it was announced that the event’s four largest exhibitors would not be attending the 2020 show, followed by similar announcements from some of the largest-attending retailers. The 2020 event was later cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, further obfuscating expectations for—PCA 2021—the first event since the PCA’s polarizing show of 2019.
Regardless, the show must go on, now with a growing number of absent manufacturers following “the big four’s” departure. Cigar Dojo will be there, covering the latest releases and other news from the event.
