It was the 5th anniversary for Asylum Cigars and the overall C.L.E. Cigar Company at this year’s IPCPR show. As such, the brands showed off a new setup, which contained C.L.E. Cigars, Asylum Cigars, EIROA Cigars, Puros Indios Cigars, Patoro Cigars, and more. The booth felt like a step in the right direction, clearly defining each of the many sub-brands within the C.L.E. umbrella and being more open and easier to navigate. In fact, the company took home “Best in Show” for their booth design in the size 11-20 weight class.

Asylum brand-runner Tom Lazuka discussed the health of Asylum Cigars, noting that 98% of the brand’s products have already been approved by the FDA, due to the Eiroa family’s deep roots in Honduran manufacturing that dates back to 1962. Tom noted that only the modern, mega-sized 70 and 80 ring gauge cigars will need to be tested for substantial equivalence.

Medulla Oblongata

the continuation of the spinal cord within the skull, forming the lowest part of the brainstem and containing control centers for the heart and lungs.

Medulla Oblongata is the latest from Asylum. The cigars follow the brand’s mental theme, offering two versions of the same cigar—one box-pressed, the other round—that represents the two sides of the human brain.

There will be 4 sizes, each packaged in 50-count boxes that are split into 2 sections of 25 cigars. The left side of the box showcases the cigars in a round vitola (Medulla) and the right side features the blend in a box-pressed vitola (Oblongata). The cigars will also be available in bundles for retailers to easily refill the box displays.

The cigars feature a 100% Authentic Corojo blend from Julio R. Eiroa’s (father of Christian Eiroa, owner of C.L.E. Cigar Co.) famed Eiroa Tobacco Farm in Honduras. While Asylum already features Honduran puro blend with the Asylum 13 Authentic Corojo, the Medulla Oblongata offers higher primings and more age on the tobaccos.

The Triple Cutter

Capitalizing on the popularity of fidget spinners—which are 3-sided toys built around a bearing, which can be spun between the thumb and forefinger—Asylum has built a spinner that replaces the weighted holes on each prong of the spinner with cigar punch cutters. Asylum has dubbed the spinner “The Triple Cutter.”
