There were few true surprises at the trade show this year, with most brands announcing their plans for the show in advance. Oettinger Davidoff provided one of the most clear and thought-out press release schedules of any company, successfully balancing minor and major announcements from Davidoff Cigars, Camacho Cigars, and AVO Cigars for a month leading up to the trade show. This series of announcements reached its peak with the announcement of Davidoff’s new Winston Churchill addition—The Late Hour.

The Davidoff compound was largely the same as with years past (albeit without Room101), housing the Davidoff brand, Camacho, AVO, S.T. Dupont, and Cusano within their massive complex. The most luxurious of these is, of course, Davidoff Cigars. The centerpiece is a large, glass-panelled humidor that contains Davidoff’s most notable releases for 2017, such as The Late Hour, Winston Churchill-themed accessories, and the new Master Selection Series. As there were no additions to the Davidoff Discovery Series (Black Label), the Davidoff Yamasá display from 2016 returned, occupying a large portion of the booth.

Master Selection Series

The Master Selection Series is a smart way for Davidoff to shift focus from Henke Kelner—creator of Tabacos Dominicanos, S.A., which produces cigars for Davidoff’s many brands under a multitude of factories in the Dominican Republic—to Davidoff’s Head Master Blender, Eladio Diaz. Henke Kelner is still in control, but seems to have taken more of an ambassador role in recent tours across the U.S., giving Davidoff the opportunity to highlight another master tobacco man within their arsenal.

Eladio Diaz showcases his talents with six unique blends, which he crafted over the years to celebrate his own birthdays. Davidoff released the first two blends prior to the IPCPR (2013 and 2016 editions), with a second batch (2010 and 2011 editions) hitting the market in August, as well as an additional release in September. While each cigar in the series features its own, unique blend, the cigars are all made in limited quantities in a 6″ x 52 toro format. Some blends are made available at Davidoff Appointed Merchant locations, while others are available only at Davidoff Flagship locations.

Winston Churchill The Late Hour

The original Winston Churchill brand debuted in 2007, with an overhauled relaunch in 2015 (first seen at a launch event in 2014). Now, Davidoff introduced the first spinoff blend in the Winston Churchill series with The Late Hour. Winston Churchill The Late Hour flips the white/gold color scheme of the standard WC cigar for a new black/gold look. This coincides with the cigar’s theme of “filling the late hours beautifully,” as Winston reportedly accomplished his greatest achievements in the late hours of the night and into the early morning.

Winston Churchill The Late Hour is offered in three sizes, each utilizing a special blend that is highlighted by Nicaraguan Condega Viso tobaccos that have been extra-fermented for six months in used scotch casks of the Speyside region. The rest of The Late Hour blend is rounded out by six tobaccos (seven total) of four different countries.

Travel Humidor

Davidoff showed off a new travel humidor that is meant to be a more stylish alternative to the traditional, plastic carrying cases. The Travel Humidor, as it is called, uses a special technique that welds the fabric together (rather than stitching) to form an air-tight seal. This satchel-style humidor holds eight cigars (as large as 60 ring gauge) in a unique, grooved tray that molds to the cigar’s size. A magnet holds the case closed, with additional pockets for accessories hidden just beneath this magnetic flap.
