The family-owned Sherman Group Holdings LLC, distributor of Nat Sherman cigars, has been purchased by Altria Group Inc.

Altria is a massive, Virginia-based company—among the world’s largest producers of tobacco—best known for their Philip Morris (Marlboro, Virginia Slims) subsidiary. The purchase was announced today, giving Altria ownership of Nat Sherman’s popular brand of premium cigarettes, cigars, and historic Nat Sherman Townhouse tobacco shop in New York City.

Altria commented on the acquisition:

Nat Sherman has a terrific brand portfolio which complements Altria’s existing smokeable product segment. Nat Sherman will benefit from the retail distribution, brand management, and adult tobacco consumer engagement expertise of Altria’s companies.Marty Barrington, Altria’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President

While details of the purchase were not disclosed, Altria appears to be positioning the move to seriously expand their presence in the premium cigar industry.

Nat Sherman was founded in 1930 and has famously used the “1930” date throughout their marketing. The company began as a tobacconist in Manhattan, NY—expanding to include their own luxury cigarettes and premium cigar brands. Though Nat Sherman has offered their own cigar brands since their inception, the brand only recently gained critical acclaim after Michael Herklots was brought on as Vice President of Retail and Brand Development—introducing the Timeless Collection cigar brand in 2012. The brand has since gone on to offer successful followup cigars such as Timeless Nicaragua, 1930, Sterling, Epoca (Cigar Dojo’s #1 cigar of 2014), and a pair of ultra-premium, limited edition offerings (Joel Sherman 75th Celebration, Nat Sherman 85th Anniversary Cigar).
