Just about everyone who is anyone knows the 601 line by Espinosa cigars. When I saw this cigar had been released, I had to jump on some. The Espinosa 601 Steel was released as an exclusive to Famous Smoke Shop last year. It is a Nico-Puro with the slogan, “Tough as Nails”. The wrapper is an extra dark Habano Oscuro with an aroma of hay and earth. The band is adorned with a black and silver 601 logo and a fitting diamond plate, steel background, giving the cigar a rugged look. I will be burning the Steel Spike vitola, an Oscuro churchill at 7″ x 50.

The pre-light is dark chocolate, with a hint of pepper. Light-up is easy and the smoke output is incredible! The burn is excellent and every draw is smooth, creamy, milk chocolate, pepper and woodsy earth. The burn line is dark and razor sharp. After about thirty minutes, I’m a third of the way in and the ash is still holding tight. No burn issues at all and the carbon line is thick and dark.

601 Steel Spike cigar review

Into the second-third, the burn is still spot on and the flavors are full, lingering like clouds in your mouth. Smoke pours from this cigar. I enjoy every moment with this stick. No changes to flavor, except in varying amounts of each respectively. The second-third burns much slower than the first. I’m now about an hour and twenty minutes in and just entering the final third.

The first thing I notice in the final bit of this cigar, is the compounding flavors from earlier. The woodsy, earth flavors meld perfectly with the pepper and chocolate. The flavors seem to melt in my mouth and coat my entire pallet. The burn is a little less razor sharp, but still requires no touchups. Sometimes, dark Oscuros can be tough to keep lit, yet I have no problems with this one. Then, after just a few minutes into the final third, the flavors begin to dwindle. The point from first puff to the dwindling flavors lasted about an hour and forty-five minutes, which is great!

Would I smoke it again?

Yes! Time and time again!

Unless the inside of your mouth is made of white pine, the word is palate, not pallet.
